The official mascot of West Virginia University, the Mountaineer mascot began appearing at West Virginia sporting events as early as 1927. By the 1934-35 school year, WVU track runner Lawson Hill was selected and a process was developed to select a student on an annual basis to roam the sidelines while carrying a muzzle-loading rifle, wearing a coonskin cap, and rallying fans in support of the team on the field.
