The Boilermaker Special has been leading Purdue to victory since its introduction in 1940, but Purdue has been known as âThe Boilermakersâ since 1891. The âspecialâ refers to a train that runs outside its normal time slot- so the trains that transported the 1940 Purdue football team were, in fact, âspecials.â The locomotive was named by combining the two, and the rest is history!
