UNC "This is Tar Heel Country" Tee

The Tar Heel nickname intertwines with the history of the state itself. Workers in the turpentine distilling trade often went barefoot in the summer months when burning pine boughs for tar and pitch; those who would demean that labor called these workers “tar heels.” In the Civil War era, North Carolinians took the nickname and wore it proudly, and both the state and its flagship university are proudly known as Tar Heel Country.
