Penn State was founded in 1855 as a “high school,” because at the time, colleges and universities had negative reputations in the region for offering impractical educations. Of course, now we know that a Penn State education is one of the best in the world, and proudly represents the state of Pennsylvania itself – the state crest is incorporated into the university seal, seen in this ‘90s-era design.
