Charlotte 49ers Classic Varsity Seal Crewneck
Citizens and residents of the greater Charlotte area urged the state of North Carolina for a postsecondary institution in Charlotte for years. In 1946, their wishes were finally granted, when UNC's expansion centers in Charlotte opened, built to meet the needs of GI Bill enrollees. In 1949, as expansion centers began to close, Bonnie Ethel Cone fought to keep Charlotte open. From there, Charlotte College went above and beyond expectations the state had for it, imbued with the "'49er spirit" that inspired their nickname.
